Formula One Returns To America?

f1-indy-2004

Since this is an off week on the circuit, why not peddle some old fashioned gossip and wild speculation, in this case, F1 is coming back to America?

Oh? Says who?

Well, that would be none other than Bernie Ecclestone, that’s who.

Bernie is, of course, the main guy in charge of the F1 circus (Max Mosely being more of an administrator/idea guy/ongoing embarrassment), and he’s not without his (many) (many) faults, but normally, when he intimates that the most popular sport in the world might return to these shores, it’s probably a good idea to pay attention.

Anyway, Bernie & all or most of the team principles had a meeting at the Belgian GP, and the team principles all said, “WE WANT A US GP DAMMIT!!!”

So Bernie is listening, as well he should.

The U. S. of A. is, for good or ill, the single largest car market on the planet, and when car companies like Toyota, Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda & BMW, who collectively are spending about one and a half BILLION dollars per YEAR on F1, say they want back in, Bernie better pay attention.

Of course, this all works out in our favor, “our” being the American car guy/race fan. A lot of people missed the US GP at Indy, and so, having it back seems like a no brainer … so, if Bernie can get his fat little hands to let go of that extra wad of money he’s been trying to extract from IMS President Tony George, then we can get the show on the road … so to speak.
