The Autovolantor Flying Car

The Autovolantor Flying Car

Oh goody, another flying car, and, yet again, this one if from Moller.

Moller has been trying and trying to make some sort of viable flying car for what seems like decades, and this would seem to be his latest iteration. There’s two things I noticed about this.

First, the overall concept of flying cars is a bad idea. I got nothing against flying, or the overall concept of flying cars; shoot, you put wings on a Lotus 7, and you essentially got a Fokker Tri-Plane (the two have about the same weight and horsepower). The problem with flying cars is the people flying them. Look at how frighteningly idiotic your average American driver, yakking on the cell phone, screaming at the kids, stuffing a Big Mac into their mouths, handles a vehicle in two dimension, now imagine given them a THIRD one to handle. When I think of that, I see lots of smoking craters.

Second, check out that picture of the proposed Moller Autovolantor Flying Car.

I see where they’re putting the fans, but where are they planning on putting the engine … looks like they got room for one, but not both.

Take a look at that picture again, does that car look familiar?

It looks like a scale model of a Ferrari Scaglietti with some wings & fans tacked on.

Does Ferrari know about this? I bet they don’t … but hey, what’s the worst that could happen? How pissed can Italians get when you steal something from them?

This is something you really have to think 2 dimensionally on. Yes, it would be terrible to put idiotic drivers in the air, but if we added automation and anti crash technology to the mix, which most people think we will have before 2030, it's great. This design is terrible though. A flying car isn't supposed to look like an airplane, it's supposed to look like a car that flies without visible wings. Hover, if you will.
