The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG

Mercedes has been revising its line-up recently, putting every model through a rather comprehensive face-lift. One of the most successful changes is the Mercedes SL63 AMG, which replaces the SL55 AMG.

More of a high-strung, steroid pumping, meth shooting grand tourer than a supercar, the SL63 AMG is a nevertheless a vicious machine, capable of turning heads with its aggressive styling, then causing the earth to rumble due to its V-8 roar. However, don’t get it confused with the psychotic SL65 AMG Black Series, to which it bears a strong resemblance. You can tell them apart by such little things like styling aspects and a $120,000 difference in price.

I’m sure you can tell the old one from the new, but I’ll point out some major differences just in case. The SL63 AMG receives a similar front fascia treatment (most notably the headlights and grill) to the one Mercedes is using on most of its high performance models. The side vents have been redesigned, while the back lights stay the same. Overall, the body and profile is lower, wider, sharper, and much more clean than the previous one.

This Merc sports a hand-built, AMG 6.2 liter V-8 engine up front. This monster powers the 63 from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, and on to a top speed of 186 mph. Horsepower is rated at 518, and the engine produces 465 pound-feet of torque. Not too bad, especially for a car weighing over two tons.

An interesting part of this car (besides the obvious) is the roof. Namely, the folding hardtop roof. Many cars now have this, with the VeeDub Eos being the first, but no other car’s is as good as this one. The 63’s is quick, smooth, and rather amazing to watch. It’s solid, as expected from Mercedes, and it doesn’t rattle, seals tight, and even has a safety mechanism to protect your luggage.

The SL63 AMG is also the very first Mercedes to be paired with the Merc’s new seven speed MCT transmission. According to Mercedes, MCT delivers a more direct connection between the engine and the wheels, along with a reduction in rotational mass. The result: quicker shifts and more power delivery. This next part I don’t really get, but I’ll include it for those of you who do. The MCT has four drive modes instead of the usual three, the fourth being fully manual. It also double-clutches to “match engine revs during downshifts…and provides active torque management to maintain revs and help stabilize the powertrain’s interaction with the chassis under braking.” (Motor Trend, May 2008). Don’t know what all that means, but apparently it’s important.

Inside, it’s the usual Mercedes luxury, though with more of a performance-oriented feel. Meaning your butt is cushioned in leather, but subjected to the SL63 AMG’s brutal performance delivers a somewhat different feeling than cruising along in a posh S-Class. Nothing real remarkable really, inside, as it should be. Those who wouldn’t want a SL63 AMG because of its interior are idiots.

Lastly, AMG is supposedly working on a Black Series version (say: oooh) of the 63. It won’t be faster than the 65 Black Series, but it’ll be faster than just about anything else. Expect a new engine, a more hardcore look, and a rather dearer price tag.
