Terrafugia Transition, Yeah, That’ll Work

Terrafugia Transition

Gah! Why do people keep trying to do things like this?

This, is the Terrafugia Transition latest in the seemingly never ending line of planes that turn into cars, or cars that turn into planes.

I can understand the impetus here. I’m a car guy, and I also worked work a large airplane manufacturer (who shall remain nameless) for a number of years. Guys that work on airplanes are also guys that are interested in, or work on, pretty interesting cars; they also have impressive sets of tools laying around, are impressed by good workmanship of the mechanical variety etc. etc. etc.

Very rarely do you see those kind of guys try and make planes that are also commuter cars.

Why?

Cause they are invariable crappy cars as well as being crappy airplanes.

I remember talking to a guy that had an Amphicar at a car show once. When asked what it was like, he said, “It’s a pretty crappy car crossed with a pretty crappy boat - does neither all that good. Fun though. The kids love it.”

The same will probably apply to the Terrafugia Transition, but they’ll end up building it anyway.

There’s also another conceit here that’s always bugged me: Some people want flying cars that will travel in three dimensions, but most people can barely handle cars working in two dimensions, doesn’t this seem like a recipe for disaster?
