Aluminum-bodied Daytona Coupe Repro Available Soon

Daytona Coupe

Ooooooo, shiny.

What you see here is the first (OK, probably one of the first) aluminum-bodied Cobra coupes to be offered from Superformance/Shelby Distribution. The “normal” Superformance coupes are fiberglass, which makes more sense from a bang for your buck perspective, but hey, if you want to go all the way, why not go for the full metal repro?

Peter Brock, the man responsible for the design of the original Daytona Coupe worked with Superformance when they made the glass version (from what I gather, it’s identical to the original), so either of these are going to be as close to the real deal as you can get.

As with the Superformance’s Shelby CSX4000 and the Commemorative GT40 continuation vehicles, the Coupe will be listed in the Shelby Registry (neat). Also, the Daytona Coupe also features a reworked suspension system that is shared with the upcoming MkII version of the Superformance Coupe.

Usually I’m not a big believer in reproduction cars … Fieros that look like Ferraris and whatnot, but I make an exception for Superformance and the guys at ERA that make a GT40 copy so good that Bobby Rahal gets direct bolt on spares for his original car from them.

Daytona Coupes were, and are, very impressive cars. They were blindingly fast, ultra-reliable with that Ford truck engine in the front, and very, very pretty. Also, they are kind of hell to live with, from what I gather. They are really loud inside, the visibility isn’t all that good, and if you’re not ready for it, all that power can be a handful, but still … but still … sure is tempting.
