Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, More Than A Pretty Face

SL65 AMG Black Series 42

The late, great Denny Hulme once said, “If it wins on Sunday, then she’s beautiful mate.”

I’ll have to take him at his word, given the, er, styling of the new Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series. Then again, that 670Hp makes a pretty convincing argument, no?

In a lot of ways, this is a typical Mercedes answer to any given question: Power and physical robustness. For everything that Colin Chapman held dear, the boys from Germany always seemed to say, “Screw it! Layer on more steel!”

And who am I to argue?

Ringing in at a pretty damn staggering $320,000, said ride sports a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine cranking out 661Hp, and a neck-wrenching 738 lb.-ft of torque. Sweet Jesus, I’ve seen ocean going tugs that put out less grunt then that.

As you would expect that will get it from zero to 62 mph in 3.9 sec but the top speed is limited to 199 mph.

And also as you would expect, it twinkles onto the scales at a whopping 4,122 pounds. And that’s even with the addition of a carbon fiber hood, fenders and trunk, and a fixed carbon fiber roof with an integrated roll cage replacing the retractable hard top. That’s not that far off the weight of a Messerschmitt Bf 109 (also Mercedes powered).

We’ve got more photos thanks to CarScoop after the jump.
