Autorama made a brief stop in Detroit the second weekend of March 2008 before drifting away towards its next destination. While in Detroit, the custom car showcase displayed an array of vehicles, both old and new, reinforcing, and in some cases, sparking new love-affairs with the car lover in everyone.
At the event you had your coupes, your roadsters, drop-heads, big blocks, dragsters, and of course custom kit cars. But aside from the wheels, there was also a breakdancing competition, an extreme pin-up girl contest, and a bikini contest. Relax. I know right about now you’re like, “What the heck is this guy talking about! Get back to the cars!” But let me explain.
These three events stood out, to me, basically because each event represented an allegorical philosophical approach to which some people view automobiles, sub-consciously for the most part.
Take breakdancing for instance. Breakdancing is now well into its third generation (that‘s old in pop-culture terms), yet the maneuvers are still being performed as they originally were, with minimal changes/”upgrades” and it’s just as trendy and awe-inspiring as it was the first time you saw it. Take a look at this Corvette:
When looking at this this beauty, are you filled with nostalgia, or are you comparing it to today’s C6? Either way, they’re both beautiful and timeless! What was good then, is good now. Wish the same thing could be said for bell-bottoms and MALE platform shoes!
The “pin-up“! The fan favorite! This has to be the most debatable of all categories in ANY competition. Being that no two people are alike and every one has an opinion, arguments and recounts could go on for days. But, in the end, there can only be one. (And here’s mine!)

(So what if it only gets 9mpg! It’s BIG and it’s YELLOW! And look at that grille! Well … maybe it’s just me … but then again, I always did want a yellow whip for some reason!)
And now to the true dilemma; the bikini contest! One of the more controversial events, no doubt. This controversy can be present when judging particular cars as well. In a bikini contest, what’s really being judged, the bikini, or the woman presenting the bikini? The average woman might say the bikini, after all it is a “bikini” contest, while the average man might reply the woman, or the woman’s body; wait, wait, does that make any sense? Either way, you have a dilemma. Take a look at the following photograph:

Now tell me, which does one judge, the shell (in this case the body), or the engine (our woman)? OR, is it a package deal? (If so, I need re-cast my votes in all those bikini contests that I’ve voted in!)
To get an idea of the vast correlations and characteristics that can be drawn up from automobiles, take a peek at the photo album within the Automoblog photo gallery entitled, “Autorama 2008 Detroit” and think; what does this car say to me, not only of it, but of me?
