The New Bullitt, Better Then Frank’s Original Ride

2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt

As one would expect, Ford is making a Bullitt version of its current iteration of the venerable Mustang.

As an adopted San Franciscan, I feel that it is incumbent upon me to let you know and discuss this with you.

For those of you that don’t know, Bullitt, was a movie produced in 1968 and starred the late, and occasionally great, Steve McQueen as a hard-nosed, straight shooting San Francisco cop by the name of Frank Bullitt (pretty macho name, huh?) who gets involved in a murder case and departmental corruption.

Overall, it’s a pretty good police yarn, and The City, as always, comes off as cool and beautiful as it is in real life.

But the real set piece, the bit of the movie that everyone remembers, is the chase scene:

As you will note, our hero, Frank Bullitt is trying to outwit some shotgun toting hitmen driving a way bitchin’ Dodge Charger R/T.

We all know who going to come out on top in this little argument, and Ford knows a winning deal when it sees it, so … enter the Bullitt limited edition version of the Mustang.

It’s in that same shade of green that Steve McQueen drives (I’ve literally heard people refer to that color as “Steve McQueen Green”. Back in the day, it was called Highland Green, and Ford sprayed it onto most of the vehicles they sold; it was a real popular color for station wagons, as I recall).

And, unlike the car in the movie, which was pretty bone stock and was chosen “because it looked like a car a cop would own”, the new edition of the Bullitt Mustang has a bunch of choice goodies, such as more horsepower, a re-done suspension, special badging, the whole lot.

And it’s not all that expensive at $31,075.
