Brits Anti-Speed Cam Revolt

Howard Beale

So, is there a British version of Howard Beale out there that I didn’t know about?

I ask this because it seems there’s an organized group of Englishmen out there that really, really hate traffic cameras.

For those of you that didn’t know, England has one of the most spied upon populations on the planet. There are cameras seemingly everywhere, and besides just casually seeing what’s going on in Trafalgar Square, a good portion of these cameras are for traffic enforcement (speeding, red light running, etc.).

So, it seems a group of fed up Brits have organized, and call themselves MAD (Motorists Against Detection) and have declared open warfare.

MAD’s leader, Capt. Gatso says, “The vigilante anti-speed camera group have announced a summer of MADness which will see them target for destruction all speed cameras in the UK. It’s now going to be a period of zero tolerance against all speed cameras.”

I wouldn’t blow off that call to arms either. The group has been at it for the past seven years and they say they’ve destroyed more than 1000 of the cameras so far.

Also, it seems that if you’re a Brit that’s not into the wanton destruction of The Queen’s property, MAD is encouraging drivers to cover up their license plates on given days in a mass act of civil disobedience.

Or, as Howard Beale said: ” … I want you to get mad. I don’t want you to protest, I don’t want you to riot, I don’t want you to write to your congressman, because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression, the inflation, the Russians, or the crime in the streets. All I know is that first… You’ve got to get mad.”
