Tokyo Traffic Control Center

Tokyo Traffic Control

And you think you’ve got job pressures?

Good God, just think what it must be like for these guys.

Imagine what it must be like, you’re just sitting there, things are going along just fine when BANG, a transformer pops and down goes a traffic light at the third busiest intersection in town followed two minutes later by someone pulling a fire alarm two blocks away.

Oh, and it’s 45 minutes into rush hour.

Could be worse, this is Tokyo, and although densely packed with cars, I bet the above scenario would have a much bigger impact in another town.

Speaking of …

Many times I’ve gotten into conversations with car guys that are also world travelers. And when the question comes up: “Which city has the worst traffic and most insane drivers?” there are many easy answers, Rome, New York, Boston, Paris, etc., but more often then not, the town (and drivers) that are #1 on that list is Cairo.

When I was living in Hawaii, a friend blew into town. Not only is he a car guy (rebuilding his umpteenth German car as I write this), but I’m surprised to find out that he used to be a courier for The CIA. (Actually didn’t sound like that big deal of a job; ‘Take this box from the embassy in Toronto to the one in Manila. Don’t let it out of your site. Use military transports.’) So over dinner at the fabulous Wo Fat restaurant we start off talking about how bad the drivers in Hawaii are (and really, they are just terrible), and I ask, “Who’s the worst you’ve seen?”

“Cairo,” he says without hesitation. “The things I’ve seen people do with cars in Cairo when I knew, didn’t think, knew they were dead … Hell, I lost count!”

And I’ve heard more or less the same thing from a wide variety of people.

So what do you guys say?

Where’s the worst you’ve seen?
