The New Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS - A Shot Aimed Square at Maranello

Aston Martin Vantage RS

My first instinct was to start this off with some sort of boxing analogy, but that would be just too trite.

OK, so Aston Martin has decided to put a V12 into the Vantage, making it the Vantage RS.

Now, I don’t know about you, but when someone says to me, “Front engined, V12, grand tourer (more than an outright sportscar),” my first thought isn’t necessarily of those fine folks in Warwickshire, England.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against Astons. They’re gorgeous, quick, and, as of late, amazingly reliable, but when someone says front engined, V12, grand tourer, my thoughts drift to another manufacturer.

Cars like that are pretty much the sole territory of Ferrari.

Long after other companies have gone the mid-engined route, Ferrari has continued to make big, front engined, V12 cars. And really, with the performance success of machines like the 550 Maranello and the 599 GTB Fiorano, who am I to argue?

OK, it also helps if you have an employee of the caliber of Michael Schumacher helping you get the chassis dialed in.

But now, here comes the AM boys, and if this isn’t a boxing match (yet), it’s more like a warning shot across the bow fired from a BIG naval cannon.

600 Horsepower, less than 3500 pounds, 0 - 100km/h in 4 seconds flat.

Ka-BOOM!

If Aston decides to put this one into series production, it would seem that there would be a serious option of going with British Racing Green, rather than Italian Racing Red.

For you guys anyway … I’m way too Italian to consider anything else.

OK, except for a Lotus 7.

Not enough?

What was that old Mark Donahue quote, “When I can come onto the main straight and leave two stripes of rubber all the way to the first corner, THEN I’ve got enough power.”

I like it, but I like the DBS and DB9 better. Now if you could stick that engine into the DBS, then you got a serious contender against Ferrari.
