Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept Unveiled

Hyundai just unveiled a stunning concept at the LA Auto Show. It’s meant to be a preview of Hyundai’s upcoming 2+2 sports coupe, but let’s hope they keep a lot of the same styling cues from this concept.

The real-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe Concept will be a direct competitor of the BMW M3 and Ford Mustang, but set at a price point similar to a Mitsubishi Eclipse. The Genesis base model will be equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but the real winner here has a 3.8L V6 powerplant which should squeal wheels to the tune of 300+ horsepower, placing it directly next to the Mustang GT.

“When it hits the market in early 2009, we aim to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like Infiniti G37, at prices more like Mitsubishi Eclipse,” says John Krafcik, VP of product development and strategic planning at Hyundai. The Genesis will be a replacement for the front-wheel-drive Tiburon..

Although unlikely, I hope Hyundai decides to keep the look of the Concept, even though it resembles a Lexus IS-F in many ways. I could do without the vents on the hood, but they do add to the overall aggressiveness of the car. With the wide stance and 20″ wheels, this car could be a real stunner once it hits showrooms in mid-2009.

A 300+ hp coupe at the price of an Eclipse! I wonder if it will start a price war and get other makers will lower thier prices?

Hyundai's seen as an economy brand in the UK so hopefully it won't put them off doing something similar to their Coupe model.

With them offering 5 years warranty on new cars at the moment, a high end performance coupe makes perfect sense!
