5 Easy Steps for Buying a Sports Car
If you like the kind of sports cars you have been seeing, then you might want to consider buying one of your own. There’s nothing like owning your own performance sports car and they’re more accessible than you might think. With these 5 easy steps for buying a sports car, you can be closer than ever to buying your dream sports car.
The first step is to come up with a budget for your sports car. You want to come up with a realistic look at how much per month you could afford to pay on payments for your dream sports car. $200 a month, $500 a month, $600 a month, whatever figure is, make it realistic and write it down. A general rule of thumb for new cars is that every $100 in monthly payments gets you $5,000 worth of car.
You would be surprised at the sports cars available that you can actually afford. For example, I recently saw a 1999 Porsche Boxster available for sale for less than $15,000. That means you could easily own a Porsche for less than $300 per month! Sure it’s no 911 Turbo, but it’s still a nice Porsche. You can also own a mid to late 90’s Nissan 300ZX TT, a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 (Twin-Turbo,) or a Mazda RX-7 TT for less than $15,000 as well, and all of those are very fast cars. Have a little more money? Try an early model Acura NSX or Dodge Viper for mid-$30K’s. Yes, they’re out there.
The second step is to come up with a realistic look at what you want in a sports car. If you are interested in doing street racing on the weekend with a souped up sports car then your needs are going to be very different from someone who is happy with a nice looking sports car that handles great in the urban jungle and the open freeway. Make sure you write down what you are looking for in your particular car.
The third step is to start looking at vehicles. Find the ones first that fit your budget. You may need to go used or you may be able to stick with new, but make sure the vehicles fit your budget. As you review them, see how well each sports car stacks up against your desires in a performance sports car. If it meets your desires, then you can take it to the next step. If not, keep looking. You don’t want to compromise when buying an enthusiast car; you will be disappointed later if you do.
The fourth step for buying a sports car is to hit the pavement and look at the sports cars you have seen online that meet your desires. Kick the tires, sit in the driver’s seat, take it for a spin, whatever you do, just get into it and enjoy it. You want to know if it’s your car or not. When looking for an enthusiast car, you will know right away after driving it if it’s your car or not.
The fifth step is to negotiate on the price. Yes, you have the power to control the final price. You may very well end up paying sticker price on your sports car, but if you can cut down the price or get some freebies tossed in, so much the better. I usually do a low ball offer of 15% below sticker price just to let the dealer know that he’s going to have to give me a good price. You never know how much markup they have on the sports car so you could push the offer even lower. It’s up to you, the beautiful thing about low balling is that you can always increase your offer, but it’s tough to lower your offer.
Follow the 5 easy steps for buying a performance sports car and you can get behind the wheel of your own sports car the easy way.
