2008 Pontiac G8 – Details and Pricing
The beloved Pontiac Grand Prix is getting ready to retire. Serving America strong since 1962, the Grand Prix covered the mid-size sedan segment, even up to the “personal luxury car” segment for a strong 46 years, beginning with the help on John DeLorean (yes, the creator of the time-traveling DMC-12.) But it’s time to relax, old buddy. Your new, younger replacement is here – the Pontiac G8.
We witnessed the unveiling of the G8 at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show, and the response was amazing. People just seem to love it, and I’m sure it won’t have a problem selling. Here are some details on the G8 when it hits streets in early 2008:
The base model starts at $27,595, a tad high in my opinion. It features a 3.6 liter V6 which pushes out 261 horsepower and 250 lb/ft of torque.
The more desirable GT model features a 6.0 liter V8 giving us 362 horsepower and 391 lb/ft of torque, but at 4,000 lbs, it might have a problem with handling.
The base model will feature a 5-speed automatic transmission, while GT owners will be offered a six-speed automatic or manual tranny. In a surprising move, 18″ wheels are standard across all models, and 19″ wheels are optional on the GT.
The only major complaint about the G8 is that it’s not offered in a 2-door coupe model. It would be more attractive and would attract exactly the crowd they’re looking for.
The interior is very nice, I’m glad they took that directly from Holden. It’s a great move away from the standard bland interior GM normally uses.
Altogether, the G8 looks great (although the hood scoops need to be an option,) and the performance is good. This might just be a home-run for Pontiac.
