2007 Hyundai Tiburon FX: Supercharged 279 HP?

2008 Hyundai Tiburon Rear

If you look closely enough at the picture above, you will see the “FX” trim next to the right taillight. While previous generations of the Hyundai Tiburon have had the FX trim, the most recent did not. That made me wonder a bit about what the trim levels would be on the new Tiburon; set to be a 2007 or 2008 model. On my previous post about the 2007 Tiburon, user Giovanni left a comment claiming his father is “high up” in Hyundai Motor Company, and that the new Tiburon FX will still have the 2.7-liter V6, but will be fitted with a supercharger, giving it 279 HP; a badly needed power boost for the underpowered sports car. Giovanni also claims the car will cost $28,000, a jump over the current price. Check out my previous post covering the Concept Tiburon by clicking here. In that post I also compare pictures of the current Tiburon versus the new. Read on…

2007 Hyundai Tiburon

If Giovanni is correct (and let’s hope he is,) then this is really a move in the right direction for Hyundai. In the previous post, I wrote:

It remains a great choice for an “around $20K” sports coupe, but if the powertrain options are going to stay the same, it might not be enough improvement. I think the car looks a lot sharper, but not everybody shares my opinion. My fiancee was looking into buying a blue 2003 Tiburon GT but was turned off a bit by the lack of power it offered. Perhaps if they upped the weak 172HP 2.7L V6 to something a bit more up-to-date like a 3.3L offering closer to 300HP, that would spice it up a bit, and keep it modern and competitive.

I stand by what I said, and this will be a great move. We were indeed turned off by the lack of power the 172HP model offered, and this supercharged version will offer over a 100HP increase. Excellent.

Not a chance anyone is going to buy that at $28,000, that’s the price of a new 350Z, only a Z has more power, handles better, looks better, and has a better resale value.

I agree, $28,000 is a bit steep, considering you can get a low-end model for $10,000 less. I doubt Hyundai would be that stupid, at least lets hope not.

Matt

Hey, I have been looking to buy a 2007 Hyundai Tiburon and I can’t wait until they are on the market. Does anyone have any idea as to when the 2007 Hyundai Tiburons are going to be available to buy? I would appreciate it if someone could help. Thanks.

Not sure Matt, I don’t know if this new model is going to be the 07 or 08 model. Are you looking to buy the current generation Tiburon or the one I’m showing here?

Another Matt

The 07 is the last of the current generation not the start of the next. The 08 model year is supposed to be a complete redesign and rumoured to have RWD with the new 3 or 3.3L “Lambda” V6. I was tempted to get an 07 late next year but I’m torn. I like the new headlights but hate the front bumper. The 05-06 bumper was soo much nicer in my opinion.

haha funny. hyundai sucks and they will never release anything with a supercharger. warranty would go through the roof. the conn. rods look like toothpicks. hyundai builds cheap crap, the hyundai chairman steals money from his own company! koreans are cheap freaks that don’t understand a thing about the car business. the ride is over, hyundai is going downhill

Let’s clarify something real quick. Hyundai is the 3rd highest brand name in initial quality according to JD Power in June of 2006. So unless you’re driving a Lexus or a Porsche, your car is a peice of crap compared to this car.

Other thing, this car was never meant to compete with the Z. This 279HP is only available in Korea where trade restrictions make it competitive. Finally, when the 2009 4.6 quad-cam Tau V8 tiburon comes out I am going to laugh in the face of all you mustang jackasses who think you know anything about cars.

I just purchased the 2007 Tiburon 2.0 litre for my wife. She is not into power or speed, just looks. I also think the car looks great, it has great lines and I love the spoiler and front and rear lights. The interior is very sporty, especially the seats. What a good buy for $18,500.

Don, I’m glad to hear you like it. It’s a very attractive car. How is the power on the 2.0?

The 2.0 puts out a surprising amount of git-up-and-go for such a small engine. I was quite impressed on my test drive. It is the perfect car for her. I, however, would purchase the 2.7 for myself.

look you guys can talk all the shit you want…that weak engine somehow pulls the shit out of that car…i got a 2007 Tib SE and i have been walkin asses in it…i am about to get a cold air intake and a SuperCharger…the thing about this car is minor modifications dramatically increase the cars performance…i seen a guy with a Tib SE get his shit up to 626 HP so dont go talking shit about the tibby’s and put your money up and mod it…you’re going to have to mod any car to be competitive anyway…i know people that will only race in Tibs

I’ve got a 2006 tib gt, and love it had a mustang gt and hated it. I do wish it had more hp, but with a few mods, like above, supercharger, cold air, exhaust, new injectors, etc… this will eat stock vets, possibly even some of the other hot asses out there with their overpriced cars.

I’d like to have a go with the new supercharged tib if its real. I want to see how it runs vs. a near stock Z (intake). Should be interesting especially given the same price range.

No super charger but rwd with 300 hp.

p.s. I have a 2006 and the car rocks. Unless 210 Km/h blasts down the #1 highway in BC isn’t for you…

p.p.s. A Hyundai mechanic told me that an enlarged (bored) throttle body will boost hp and torque like crazy and will not void warranty (as he said: “how would they know unless they pull it apart and measure it?”).

Rh, please read my most recent post about the Genesis Coupe Concept: http://www.automoblog.net/2007.....-unveiled/

Also, a bored throttle body will increase power, but it shouldn’t be the first thing you do. There are more efficient and cost-effective ways of increasing power first.
