Have you ever looked into a racing school, but couldn’t afford the 2 or 3 thousand dollars? Even if you want to look into racing as a career, that’s a bit expensive, at least right away. Want to know if racing would be something you would enjoy? Well it seems you may have another choice.

Can you afford $50? If you are even the slightest bit serious about racing, or just want to have a good time, I might just have your answer. Starting July 22, Rev It Up Racing begins in Orange County, CA then hits 5 more cities across the country. Included are Dallas, Miami, Chicago, New York and finally Washington D.C. If you are near any of those cities I recommend signing up now.
For $50 ($45 if you sign up two weeks before the event and $40 if you are one of the first 100 to sign up in each city,) you get to receive training from instructors including Nipper Alsup, Jeff Andretti, Loren Elmer, Caroline Wright and more. The only requirements are you have to be 18 and have a valid driver’s license, and if you just want to watch, general admission is free, so bring the whole family.
Don’t think this is only for kids though; there are four classes for competition in total; two for novices and two for people with track experience. Sponsored by Chevy, you get to drive three different cars; a 205 hp Cobalt SS Supercharged, a 303 hp Impala SS and a new 440 hp Corvette. Don’t think you are going to be going 100+ mph in a brand new shiny Corvette though, the courses are going to be pretty tight, which means you probably won’t go much faster than 40 mph. But then again, you aren’t going to Skip Barber Racing School (just yet.) You won’t be driving a Z06 anyway, but for an extra 10 bucks, you can ride “shotgun” in a Z06 with a pro driver; good experience if you are serious. By the way, if you are the “city champion,” meaning you get the best lap time, you win Pirelli racing shoes, and if you have the best lap time in the country for this event, you get a shiny, brand spanking new Cobalt SS Supercharged. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.
In addition to the competition courses, you get five “Skills Clinics” from pros who have taught at various racing schools. They teach things like car control, tire dynamics, braking techniques, and racing line analysis, which are important whether you want to get into racing or just want to better your drive to work every day.
There are more things going on there as well as more awards and prizes. I had a conversation with Jim from RIU, who was kind enough to explain the event to me in detail, and I plan to attend the Chicago event, so expect a complete review with pictures and everything after August 13. I hope to see you there!
